Kayaking Merit Badge to Roll Out in Time for Summer Camps
Although the official industry launch of the new Kayaking merit badge won’t take place until the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market event Aug. 2–5 in Salt Lake City, the “earn date” for the badge has been moved up to June 13 to accommodate Scouts who are heading to summer camp.
Official badge requirements and pamphlets will be available in Scout shops and online in mid-June. (Please note: Kayaking merit badge pamphlets are arriving at the National Distribution Center in the second week of June and should start hitting the shelves at Scout shops and summer camps shortly thereafter.)
Good to learn about the Kayaking MB requirements, but I am curious that the mid-June release is to “accomodate Scouts who are heading to summer camp”. Was this announced earlier? Knowing about the release months ahead would have enabled our camps to “be prepared” by adding kayaking equipment and by training camp staff on the requirements.

My troop has a kayak trip planned in a week. I would like to take the opportunity to get the boys started on this merit badge. I fully intend to be a merit badge counselor when I can add it. Is there anyway I can get the requirements as well so I can start working with the boys on some of the things they need to do on this trip?

Our council scout shop says that the pamphlets for the KAYAKING merit badges are in the warehouses but they will not have them by the June 13 scheduled start date. Our troop will be at scout camp next week and a number of the boys want to earn the Kayaking merit badge there. Sending us the requirements would be very helpful. Thank you.

Thanks to the folks who made sure this MB was rolled out in time for 2012 summer camp season. My 17 year old Scouts are grateful!
My son has earned the BSA Kayaking badge two years ago at summer camp. Are these requirements similar and could they be used towards the new Kayak merit badge?

Im an Asst. Scoutmaster, I have looked at the award and the Merit badge they are similiar and meets all requirements except a couple for the merit badge. to compare them go online to merit badge.org and click onto merit badges, then click onto Kayaking merit badge, then click on work sheets it will print off both the Merit badge and the Award and list the requirements each can be credited.
